High manganese steel is a kind of excellent anti-abrasion material. It was discovered in 1934 that austenitic can be obtained at room temperature if we increase the manganese content in hyper-eutectic steels, carbon to manganese ratio is to 1:10 at that time. The most commonly used high manganese steel is Mnl3 steel, the limit yield of this steel is relatively low, therefore, sliding and cold work hardening are easy to occurred when the high manganese steel parts are bearing a relatively high pressure. So parts surface will not have metal debris peeling during corrosive wear. Some of thermal power plants ball mill liners are made of high manganese steel, the defect of it is poor machining ability due to the high content of alloying elements and can only be delivered in casting steel.

Wear resistant casting iron is also a kind of metal material with very good abrasion resistance,  and widely used for manufacturing grinding ball mill. The earliest wear resistant casting iron is white iron, but it is not suitable for high impact occasions because of very high brittleness. We can  improve the toughness of the white iron if we add some chromium. But there will be a higher product costs due to the limited chrome ore resources. At present, boron white cast iron, vanadium titanium cast iron and rare-earth nodular cast iron are widely used, their wear resistance performance is good.

Chromium carbide wear resistant steel plate are used to replace high manganese steel and wear resistant casting iron due to its high wear resistance and long service life, it can work at least 4 time better than that and only 2 times higher in purchasing cost.
