Function of various elements:
1.Carbon (C) :The increasing of carbon will prove yield point and tensile strength of steel plate, but the plasticity and impact resistance are reduced. Welding properties of the steel is poor when carbon content is more than 0.23%, so carbon content is less than 0.20% that in low alloy structural steel for welding. High carbon content will reduce the steel weather resistance and corrosion resistance capability, and make it easy to be decayed in exposed field. In addition, carbon can increase cold brittleness and aging sensitivity of steel plate.
2.Silicon (Si): Si is used as as the reducing agent and deoxidizer in the process of steel making, so fully-killed steel contains 0.15 - 0.30% silicon. Si is accepted as alloy element if it is more than 0.50-0.60% in steel plate, as it can significantly improve the elastic limit, yield point and tensile strength, and is widely used for spring steel. Strength of quenched and tempered steel is improved by 15 to 20% when we add 1.0-1.2% in it. It can improve corrosion resistance and anti-oxidation when it was combined with molybdenum, tungsten, chromium and so on, therefore can be used to produce heat resistant steel plate.
3.Manganese (Mn): Mn is a good deoxidiser and desulfurizer in the steel-making process, and usually keeps at 0.30 - 0.50% in steel plate. It can improve the harden-ability and hot work-ability of the steel plate. High manganese (11 - 14% ) steel plate has a extremely high wear resistance performance and widely used as e excavator bucket, ball mill liner plate. Corrosion resistance is getting weaker when there is a higher manganese content, also has a very poor welding performance.
4.Phosphorus(P): In general, phosphorus is a harmful elements in steel, it will increase its cold brittleness, and reduce welding performance and plasticity oppositely, therefore, high quality steel requires it less than 0.045%.
5.Sulfur (S): normally, it is also belong to harmful elements. It will produce hot brittleness and reduce the ductility and toughness of the steel plate, resulting in cracks in the forging and rolling. Sulfur is also bad to the welding performance and reduce the corrosion resistance. So we usually require a less than 0.055%, but high quality steel demand it is less than 0.040%.
6.Chromium (Cr): chromium can significantly improve the strength, hardness and wear resistance to structural steel and tool steel,but it also reduce the plasticity and toughness. It is an important ally element for stainless steel, heat-resistant steel plate
